Big Tent is another free platform that supports community groups. it has many features like forums, filesharing, membership management, etc. and there is also a video tour so you can get more familiar.
BlogtronixMicro is a communication tool. to get more familiar you can watch this demo tour.
disqus (pronounced discuss) as it shows is a cooment management system. it can be embeded into another tool like Moodle, Tumblr, Google Sites, etc.
Edmodo is a social networking site that is a cross between facebook and twitter.
EdCrowd is a knowledge sharing site for teachers, it is a space to ask questions, to share experience, and to get answers. The site has facilities for collaborative editing, voting, badges, and personal reputation points. You can easily create groups within the site. With this site teacher should be able to teach with a crowd.
Elgg is an open source social engine platform. It offers a toolkit of social network functions. You can coonect, share, and collaborate.
Grouply provides a free alternative to Ning. You can take a tour to be able to learn more about this site.
Socialmediaclassroom is a free classroom for collaborative work.
Edu2.0 is a free, web-hosting learning management system that helps to create an online school in minutes. It’s comprehensive and can be accessed from any web browser.
Mixxt has many functions which include, forums, groups (with sub-forums and images), images, events, files, news, blogs, videos, wikis, polls, shoutbox, etc.
Grou.ps is very simillar to Ning, with some additional features such as creating a wiki and adding new modules and pages to transfer members from Ning to Grou.ps.
Blastgroup will help you create a free group website and email list for any group. It has alot of same functionalities as Ning; such as custamizable group website, blogs, events, discussion forums, activity streams, etc.
Jabbster helps you to create a social group and too share too. You can connect and share your life with only people you want. It also integrates Flickr, Youtube, Metacafe, Dailymotion, Facebook, and Yahoogroups.
SCoPE. If you want a SIG space in SCoPE it must be educational and not intended for formal courses.
Webs gives you the facilities to build a website. You can build group websites complete with blogs and forums, calenders, and othe widgets.
Wackwall is a free tool for creating custom social networks with easy setup and complete feature set.
Netvibes aggregate widgets and feeds from blogs in one public forum .
Yola is a free content management system with over one hundred templates available.
Lefora ia a free forum hosting service with a lot more features than traditional forums, such as profile email newsletters, media posting, embeding of youtube videos, support for flash widgets, etc.
