Microblogging
May 19th, 2010 by maryamasoodar
Microblogging is a web service that allows the subscriber to broadcast short messages to other subscribers of the service. Microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically much smaller. A microblog entry could consist of nothing but a short sentence fragment, or an image or embedded video. Posts are brief (typically 140 – 200 characters) and can be written or received with a variety of computing devices, including cell phones. Some microblogging services offer features such as privacy settings, which allow users to control who can read their microblogs, or alternative ways of publishing entries besides the web-based interface. These may include text messaging, instant messaging, E-mail, or digital audio. Other potential applications of microblogging include traffic and sports updates and emergency broadcast systems.

Hash tags
May 17th, 2010 by maryamasoodar
Messages on services such as Twitter or identi.ca may be tagged by hash tags. Hash tags are prefixed with a hash symbol (#),with multiple words linked together, such as those in:
#Rose is a kind of #flower
Then, if a person does a search on the term #rose, this tagged word will appear in the search engine results.

Twitter is known as the internet’s short message service (SMS). Its users send and read messages which can be up to a hundred and forty characters on the writers profile page and sent to the authors subscribers who are known as followers. Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service which likes to rename the its functions so they would be exclusive to twitter only. Some examples are: tweets, which is another name for the messages sent on twitter; twitpic is a website that allows users to easily post pictures to twitter; tweetDeck, is an Adobe AIR desktop twitter; tweetie is a client for twitter; twitterrific is a Mac OS X and iPhone OS client for twitter; twitoaster, is a Twitter web application that threads and archives users conversations in real time; moreover, his service is often used by journalists, bloggers or companies who need to collect, organize and keep a track of their twitter mentions.

My Webwag
May 13th, 2010 by maryamasoodar
My Webwag is a start page. Webwag comes with a search widget which is easy to use and can contain any or all of these search engines: Yahoo!, Google, MSN, and Exalead. And it searches Wikipedia too.
When you import your OPML file, it adds them all to one tab and then adds separate tabs for the folders or categories the file contains. This makes it easy to navigate through all the feeds. One point that I would count as its deficits is that it only displays the headlines and then shows the first part of the item description when you hover your mouse on the headline.
There is a feature called ‘Widget On Demand’. This is a tool that lets you capture any part of any web page and include it dynamically on your Webwag page. When the web page changes, so will your Widget On Demand.
Each tab can be made public and will then appear in the Webwag Factory. Each of your feeds and your widgets-on-demand can also be made public in the Webwag Factory or shared by email.

Protopage
May 7th, 2010 by maryamasoodar
Protopage is a powerful start page. It has its own RSS reader which pops up when you click on an item in any of the RSS feeds you have added.
There is a customizable search box in the top right corner which comes with a choice of several search engines.
You can keep your page private, make it public, or set a group password so that you can share parts of it with specific friends or colleagues.
Your page is organized into tabs, and your tabs are grouped into categories. Whether your tabs are shared or not depends on the category those tabs are in. check it out and you’ll know what I mean.

Pageflakes
May 3rd, 2010 by maryamasoodar
Pageflakes is another start page. It includes a good RSS reader. This site has a large library of modules called “flakes”. I like the del.icio.us flake which not only imports all your bookmarks, but also keeps them updated. This tool can be customized in many ways.
Another cool flake is “Local Events”, explore it, I’m sure you’ll like it.
There is a handy search bar in the top right corner where you can choose between Google, Yahoo! and Live.
You can share your Pageflakes content by making it public at “your login” or you can chose to share tabs (sections) with friends, who you invite by email. If you choose to, these friends can also edit the content of the tab.

screencasting
May 3rd, 2010 by maryamasoodar
Screencasting is a way to capture your screen while you’re working. You can also record your voice and this makes it very easy to share and explain what you want to say. If you’ve ever tried explaining something to friends that they didn’t understand and you always though, if only they could be here and you could show it to them live on screen then you could cut on the extra explanations, save your time and energy. Well, that’s not too much to hope for. Now there are softwares that can help you do screencasting. You can use camstudio, jing, windows media encoder, and also screencast.
Here is a short useful video I found on youtube. This is on camstudio, but I’m sure you can find many more tutorials which will help you work with the software that you like.

Personalized start page
April 30th, 2010 by maryamasoodar
Personalized start pages are services online that help you build a home page that you are comfortable with. Basically you put any of the pages you want to be ready at reach, on this page. You can add web feeds and bookmarks, get notified of new emails, see calendar entries, photos from Flickr, news headlines or favorites of your daily concern.
According to how useful these personalized start pages are for you, you can choose one and start working with it.
I would suggest Netvibes, pageflakes, Protopage, My Webwag, iGoogle, Live.com, My Yahoo!.
